Issues: Education

I am an educator that understands the complexities of teaching. As we sit here 60% of our student population is considered economically disadvantaged. The research shows that although a good teacher is a piece of the puzzle, poverty, home life, influence of the community, and the overall quality of the curriculum all play a vital role in the success of any student. The board should:

-Give our teachers the latitude to change instruction and create a positive, accepting environment.
-Hold schools accountable for teaching all subjects, not just the tested ones. Too many subjects are ignored day after day in favor of easily digestible, worksheet-oriented work.
-Recognize that we are a diverse society in a globally connected world. Isolationist principles and fear mongering will not benefit Texas!

If elected I would:

-Give more weight to the College and Career Readiness Standards. All students would be given the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills beginning in Kindergarten.
-Put an end to the culture wars. This can be done by demanding that board members focus on what is best for all of Texas' children through the lens of education.
-Put integrity back in the board and honor our promises. The board should be transparent and accountable for their decisions. The board would not be able to make curricular changes without first getting approval from the original committee of experts and educators that created the curriculum in the first place.
